Entertainment Weekly asks Jeff - 3 questions 11/02
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Okay, Jeff. You were there. How thick was that tension after the Tribal Council vote with Cochran switching sides? Tell me what the scene was like as the contestants headed out of Tribal and back to camp.
JEFF PROBST: It was very tense after the vote. I felt for Cochran. There is nowhere to hide out there on the island. Nobody to call. No one to drop by with a Dominoes pizza and make you feel better. He made a big move and nobody was happy about it. It was very clear.
For the life of me, I cannot find any strategic advantage to switching sides at this point other than avoiding the colored rock. Obviously, the colored rock exists as a game of chicken to see if anyone blinks first, so I ask you: Would you ever in a million years change your vote to avoid it? And is it indeed an act of cowardice to do so?
I think Cochran changed his vote for a few reasons and the number one reason is that he felt bullied by his tribe. So given the chance to go to the other tribe was appealing because he might improve his position from bottom of the totem pole and if nothing else, “pay back is a bitch, Ozzy.” Would I draw rocks? Depends. Jim’s logic made no sense to me because he kept saying that his “tribe” had the better odds, because they had two people with immunity, but Jim still had the same odds as everyone else. This is an individual game. At that point in the game I am not going to draw rocks. This is a zero sum game which means there is only one winner. I’m not drawing a f—ing rock this early in the game. Too many moves left to make. I like Cochran’s move. He’s a long shot to win so he went for broke.
You looked like you were struggling to keep a straight face during Ozzy’s acting job at Redemption Island and I don’t blame you because he was AWFUL. Have you ever in 23 seasons had a point where you felt you may have slipped a little — or come close to slipping — in outing someone’s deception with a comment or facial reaction?
Hard to know what the contestants can read on my face. I thought I did a pretty good job given Ozzy’s “unbelievable” performance! For the most part I feel confident that I don’t give away anything. One big thing I have going for me is the contestants wouldn’t know what to look for anyway.
This season is on a really good run and the only thing I’m pissed about is having to wait an entire week to see what happens next. So tell me: What happens next?
Cochran’s move left a mark. The tribe is not happy about it. The first ten minutes are some of the most uncomfortable of the season as they UNLOAD on Mr. Harvard.
