Have You Heard?

The (cutting) table has turned this week, with the underdogs impressing the judges and Gretchen landing on the chopping block.  Divided into two teams of six, the designers are challenged to create a six piece collection that is on trend for Fall 2010.

Team Luxe opts to do menswear with a Camel color palette and has a total of  four wins  (Gretchen with two, Andy with one, and Mike C. with one), while the majority of team Military and Lace has been in the bottom. It would seem that so much talent on their side would give Team Luxe an edge, but instead it turns out to be a recipe for disaster.

Although there were not supposed to be any team leaders, Gretchen quickly establishes herself as Team Luxe’s dictator.  She immediately begins criticizing  Mike C., who has immunity, tearing apart his sewing skills, taste level, and overall design aesthetic.   Although he proved his talent and skill with last week’s win, the other designers join the bandwagon. Ivy takes it too far when she knocks the dress he did the previous week, causing him to become visibly upset. The clashing of personalities wasn’t the only problem; the plan that was implemented by Gretchen, for each designer to create individual garments rather than one whole look, yielded unfortunate results.
Team Military and Lace is not without drama either.

The tension comes to a head after Tim’s critique of Casanova’s garment caused him to have a meltdown, crying that he can only design for “old ladies and sluts” and that he’s even getting fat. When he fails to show up to style the models’ hair with Garnier styling consultant Peter Butler, his model must offrt words of encouragement to keep him from quitting. The models’ hair, which is pulled back slightly messily to make it look as though the models have been in battle(or  as Mundo puts it, runway wars) turns out to be a hit on the runway.

It is not just Team Military and Lace’s hair that impresses the judges; the collection itself is outstanding.  The judges, including guest Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, fall in love with Casanova’s white skinny pant and black lace top with a cutout in the back. He is ecstatic to be declared the winner.  Peach’s look consisting of a red top and blue skirt is another favorite.  Team Luxe, on the other hand, was described by Michael Kors as “anything but luxe”.  For one thing, the clothes are flat; Nina describes the proportions as being aweful and the colors ghatstly.  Getting a straight answer as to who the weakest designer was is like pulling teeth; Gretchen digs herself a hole by changing her story too many times, finally saying that the reason her own design came out bad was because she spent the majority of her time helping Michael C.  The ill-fitting fight attendent shirtdress created by A.J. gets him thrown off, but immediately after he and Gretchen leave the runway Tim pulls a rare but totally justified  move by reprimanding Gretchen rather harshly for being manipulative and a bully.  By the end of the episode, Michael C. is crying and Gretchen says that her feelings are hurt.  How will the designers be able to handle working with new models on top of such strong emotions?
