Project Runway 8 to be just way too damn long...

TVFanSpace.com - (The Reality TV Social Network) - On Thursday, 17 brand-new designers join the eighth season of "Project Runway" to compete for the $100,000 grand prize from L'Oreal Paris to start his or her own line. But first, ET gets the lowdown on the new season from host Heidi Klum, who says her favorite part is seeing if the designers can actually deliver.

"Every time I am intrigued by who the designers are," she says. "When we do the big casting, you never know what they can do. It shows in the first two episodes who really has talent, because when we do the casting and they bring the clothes, we never really know if they made those clothes, or someone helped them with it, or how long it took."

This season "Project Runway" expands from an hour-long series to 90-minutes, picking up the extra 30 minutes that last season was devoted to "Models of the Runway." The extra time will be devoted to focusing on the designers and the challenges and will not change the format of the series.

As for the specific challenges this season, Heidi reveals that famed hat designer Philip Treacy will be bringing 15 of his most avant-garde hats over from the U.K. for a competition in which the designers choose a hat and have to design an outfit to complement it.

Heidi tells ET that the designers will also be creating something for her this season, but she won't say what it is. And, the unconventional materials challenge will also return because Heidi feels that it is a viewers' favorite.

"I always think that shows their creativity and how they can be inspired by things that are not bendable or sew-able and they have to think of other ways to make clothes out of these materials," she says. "I always get stunned myself when I see what they can do. We had Betsey Johnson there for that."

Heidi also cautions that the judges might send two or more designers home at a time if they fail at one of the tests.

"We only do it if it is really necessary and we can't make up our minds if it should be one over the other," Heidi explains. "We have done this where two go, but that is not like a new concept of the show. We usually have one go per show. We are not changing the format in that sense."

In addition to the $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris, the winner of "Project Runway" will walk away with a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine, a $50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel and the chance to design and sell a collection on Piperlime.com.

"Project Runway" premieres Thursday, July 29 in its new 9 p.m. timeslot on Lifetime TV.
