About the show: Hawaii Five-O is an American television series produced by CBS Productions, and set in Hawaii. The show originally aired for twelve seasons from 1968 to 1980, and continued in reruns. The show featured a fictional state police unit run by Detective Steve McGarrett, played by actor Jack Lord. The name of this television series comes from the fact that Hawaii was the 50th state to join the United States. The theme music composed by Morton Stevens became especially popular.
On May 17, 2010, the Hawaii Five-O remake was picked up by CBS, which scheduled it for Monday nights in the 10-11 pm timeslot. The news was good for the state of Hawaii, who hopes that the remake will pump new life into the economy. Production on the remake started in June 2010.
In this contemporary version, a new elite federalized task force is formed with a mission, which is to tackle crime in the Aloha State. Detective Steve McGarrett, a decorated US Navy lieutenant commander turned cop, returns to Oahu to investigate his father's murder and stays after Hawaii's governor persuades him to head up the new team: his rules, her backing, no red tape and full blanket immunity to hunt down the biggest "game" in town.
Joining McGarrett is Detective Danny "Danno" Williams, a newly relocated ex-New Jersey cop who prefers skyscrapers to the coastline but is committed to keeping the Islands safe for his 8-year-old daughter; and Chin Ho Kelly, an ex-Honolulu Police Detective wrongly accused of corruption and relegated to a federal security patrol, who is also a former protege of McGarrett's father. Chin's cousin, Kona, is a beautiful and fearless native, fresh out of the academy and eager to establish herself among the department's elite. McGarrett vows to bring closure to his father's case while the state's brash new FIVE-0 unit, who may spar and jest among themselves, is determined to eliminate the seedy elements from the 50th state.
Casting: In February 2010, it was announced that actor Daniel Dae Kim had been cast to play Chin Ho Kelly. He was the first actor cast for the remake. Several days later, Alex O'Loughlin was cast as Steve McGarrett, but in this version he will play the son of the senior McGarrett (portrayed in the original version by Jack Lord) after the producers decided to reboot the series and make the junior McGarrett a Navy SEAL. The producers intend to acknowledge him as the original character's son in the pilot as one of his hobbies will be restoring the elder McGarrett's 1974 Mercury Marquis back to life. The junior McGarrett will also have a sister as well, with Taryn Manning taking the role of Mary Ann McGarrett. Actress Grace Park was later cast as rookie detective Kona (nicknamed "Kono") Kalakaua, Chin Ho's cousin (Kona is the female version of the original version's Kono Kalakaua, but will use the Kono name in the remake), Jean Smart as Hawaii Governor Pat Jameson, and Scott Caan as Danny "Danno" Williams. Although she appeared in the pilot, it was not known whether or not actress Angela Gots will have a regular role, in which she would play a lieutenant in the series.

Hawaii Five-O and NCIS LA will have an episode where they share staff. Joe white will fly Kensi out to Hawaii since she is an expert lip-reader. She will help to pull some information from footage of McGarret's father, which will also involve the Wo Fat story line. Here is what Alex O'Loughlin had to say about it:"I thought it was a really interesting cross-pollination because we're not from NCIS and NCIS is not Hawaii Five-0 but it worked. It's great that we can push characters over and back, as long as we make sure that the shows stay true to what they are."
