Gladys Maria Knight was born May 28, 1944, in Atlanta Georgia. She as been described as the "Empress of Soul." She is also an American singer, songwriter, actress, humanitarian, and author. She is best known for the hits she recorded during the 1960's and 1970's for Motown and Buddah Records. She is an 8 time Grammy award winner.

 Her introduction into the music world was winning Ted Mack's "Original Amateur Hour" TV show contest at the age of 7 in 1952.  In the following year, she and family members formed the musical group called "The Pips", named after a cousin James "Pip" Woods. Later the group became "Gladys Knight and the Pips." The group was the opening act for Diana Ross and the Supremes. But, later Miss Ross kicked her off the tour because of the audience reception to Knight's soulful voice. Ross felt overshadowed.
 
Some of the groups top hits were: "Every Beat of My Heart," "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and "If I Were Your Woman." And no one will forget "The Midnight Train to Georgia."
 
She has been a long time resident of Las Vegas and she returned this past year to the Tropicana Hotel. Her partner is Tristian MacManus.
