About the Show: “Boardwalk Empire,” a period drama set in tumultuous, Prohibition-era Atlantic City, N.J., will premiere Sept. 19. That means the series will be launching just as the broadcast networks are premiering all their new fall shows -- a sign HBO must feel particularly confident in its prospects.

Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer and directed the pilot. The show was created by Terence Winter, a "Sopranos" writer, who recruited much of the crew

The series is based on the book by Nelson Johnson about the corrupt political atmosphere around Atlantic City in the Prohibition era of the 1920s, with Steve Buscemi playing a fictionalized version of real political boss Nucky Johnson (Buscemi's version is called "Nucky Thompson"). Since the series has fictional characters interacting with real ones, Winter felt it was best to fictionalize Nucky to give the character more freedom. Buscemi, taking the lead after a long distinguished career of character roles, called the role "one of the best parts I've ever had in my life, and it's just so exciting for me to go to work and to know that these scripts are so strong and to play a character who is ambitious."

"I was afraid that, if people started to Google the real Nucky Johnson, they would become ahead of the story, and they would know what became of Nucky or when did he live and die or what he did or didn't do," he said. "So by making him Nucky Thompson, he's Nucky, but he's not Nucky. Our Nucky can do anything and veer off into any directions, and it's much more freeing creatively for myself and my writers. We can just sort of open it up."

Winter feels there's enough of a landscape to have the show run for a long time, joking that he hopes the run is decades long. "You know, it's almost an epic novel, I would hope. And, you know, God willing, we'll have the opportunity to do that." The arc of the 12-episode series will run from the dawn of Prohibition through the 1920 presidential election, delving into the suffrage movement. Ultimately, Winter hopes the drama will be picked up long enough for him to weave the narrative of the entire decade, ending with the crash of 1929. The Atlantic City boardwalk grew even more colorful during that period, he noted, acquiring acts like diving horses in 1928.

The elaborate set, which took three months to build, matches the scope of the project: sherbet-hued shops peddling palm readings, postcards and saltwater taffy line a 45-foot-wide boardwalk ringed with trucked-in sand. There's even a "Baby Incubator" building, modeled after a real baby hospital where tourists on the boardwalk gawked at underweight infants. Cast:
Steve Buscemi as Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (who is based on Enoch L. Johnson)

Michael Kenneth Williams as Chalky White, the de facto mayor of Chickenbone Beach

Stephen Graham as Al Capone

Michael Stuhlbarg as Arnold Rothstein

Joseph Riccobene as Frankie Yale

Michael Shannon as Agent Nelson Van Alde

Michael Pitt as Jimmy Darmody
